50 Gardens in one Month

50 Gardens in one Month It isn’t often you can say you have visited over 50 gardens in one month, but this November that is what I did.  Well, if I’m completely honest – a few were in the very tail end of October and one of the gardens was mine, so the exact tally is a little hazy, but it was all part of … Continue reading 50 Gardens in one Month

I got my garlic in.Normally plant it in April in an attempt to beat the rust, but that makes it ready for harvest while I’m away in November and it is past its best. So, I've gone a month later than I normally do so I wouldn’t miss the harvest window and still be early enough to avoid the rust. Hopefully, I’ve timed it right and can harvest before the Christmas holidays... but that is something for future me to worry about. The good news is the garlic is in the ground! : o) ... Great news! The rats didn't get my kumara this year!I got a massive haul from my 1 square metre bed with 4 plants in it. Well massive for me. On the whole most of them are what I would consider huge! I can't stop smiling. Now is the tricky bit - the curing so they store well. I've left them in the greenhouse on the second shelf in the shade and kept the dirt on. Washing them is one of the worst things you can do. I'll check on them regularly to make sure the skins are getting tough and they aren't rotting and the atmosphere isn't too dry. And I've locked the greenhouse down so tight the rats won't get them in there. Super chuffed with my harvest! : o) ... See MoreSee Less

I made a ruler to rule them all! When planting things in the garden I like to get the spacing right. It is always tempting squish things in a little close, but experience has taught me in my garden that it is a recipe for disaster as pests and disease can waltz freely from one plant to another. Or the plants themselves grow so large they crowd each other out as they fight for space above and below ground and soil nutrients are spread thin and where I could have had one strong plant I end up with mediocre ones. The garden is a great teacher when you stop to notice. So I try to give them the space they need, which is where my ruler comes in. I found a metre long piece of wood that in a different situation could be called a stick, and I marked it off with a tape measure with a permanent marker pen and this shall forevermore be my handy dandy plant spacer to give the plants a good start in my garden. : o) ... I need a new rhubarb because I accidentally grew kiwano!I did something that I know I shouldn't have done. Ordinarily nothing good comes from letting volunteers grown in close proximity to plants I actually want to grow - they always come off second best or in this case... die!I don't even know where the kiwano came from. I grew them once several years ago and decided it wasn't worth it and decided not to grow it again. However when a strange vine showed up in my rhubarb patch I thought 'I wonder what that is... I'll let it do its thing to find out...'Now I have more than a dozen super spikey not quite ripe kiwano and a dead rhubarb.I've got one in a paper bag with a banana but I may need to do research to find out what to do with them to redeem the situation! : o) ...
