A Notable Situation

Well... I'm glad that job is done - it was huge! I've been taking care of my rosemary hedge. To start with I refreshed the windbreak as it was so windswept it wasn't doing its job anymore. Then I got the hedge trimmer out and chopped off the fluffy new growth. It's not one of my favourite jobs because it is quite exhausting and you can't really do it in too many stages. I normally try to do it in one sunny, dry day but this time it took two days.I only need to do it three times a year: early spring, early summer and in autumn before the temperatures get too cold. It's not exactly level and perfect, but the new growth will soon come in and hide my wonky efforts.Job done. : o) ...

How do you know when it's time to plant your summer loving plants?💚 You could do what the Victorian's did back in the old walled garden days. Apparently they got a young gardener to whip down their trousers and sit on the bare soil while eating their lunch. If they could do it comfortably it was good to go.💚 Or you could get a soil thermometer and check the soil temperatures. Under 15C, summer loving plants can't absorb some of the important nutrients properly and can become stressed. It is a good idea to check first thing in the morning because the nights are still quite cold.💚 And you should check your long range weather forecast for any cold snaps in the future. Spring is a tease and she can flip flop between hot and cold for a few more weeks yet! : o) ...

Hmmm - so that's what happened to my coffee on Friday! I completely forgot to finish it... and completely forgot where I put it.I think it might be time to do the gardener's 'walk of shame' and round up all the other cups lurking in garden before Hubby the Un-Gardener realises there are hardly any left in the kitchen! : o) ...

I'm super proud of my new book Growing Vegetables - A simple guide for New Zealand gardeners. It's aim is to provide gardeners with a good solid foundation of knowledge, supporting them through the first growing season with weekly guidance and timely advice. Its packed with tips and techniques, planning charts, and places to record notes and is a handy resource of trusted, reliable gardening information, quick to access and easy to understand. Where to find a copy: This should be available at all good bookstores throughout New Zealand. If your local bookstore doesn’t have it, ask them to get it in for you. : o) ...
