Pickled Onion Problem

I had a bit of a problem.  Well it was a good problem, but with a knock on effect that turned it into a not so good problem.  But in terms of real life serious problems it is hardly a blip at all so could probably be described as a good problem to have.  I grew my onions too big! Normally my harvest is a … Continue reading Pickled Onion Problem

Aside from everything that makes Easter a special celebration, there is something else that makes it special for us. It is 8 years since our house arrived. Half arrived the day before Easter 2018 and the other half arrived the day after and then over the next few weeks it was stitched back together so we could move in. We still haven't completely finished renovating it - we've spent too much time in the garden, but I don't regret a thing. : o)Here's a short 10min vid of the whole process. If you would prefer just looking at photos - pop over to my sarahthegardener Instagram page. ... See MoreSee Less

One of things I missed when checking the garden yesterday was my once perfect kale has been destroyed by Cabbage White caterpillars! There were loads of the cheeky monkeys and even some chrysalises in various stages of pupation and some empty ones. It was quite the infestation. And to add insult to injury the aphids had spotted the stressed plant and made themselves at home!I picked off all that I could find and gave them to the chickens. There won't be any kale chips for us for a while... : o) ... See MoreSee Less

When I first got home the wind was howling a hoolie, so I took a day to relax and unwind before venturing into the garden. I was hesitant to see what I would find because I haven't started my cool season crops yet as I couldn't be sure they'd survive without me and while I was away we received a whopping 119mm of rain in one day! Today I ventured out there and while there wasn't much to see, I was pleased to see flowers, especially the roselles. The broccoli has bolted but the upside is the bees are enjoying the blooms. The cute perfect supermarket sized zucchini is now a marrow - I knew Hubby the Un-Gardener wouldn't eat it! The kumara is doing well and the leaves are starting to yellow - I just need to keep an eye out for rats. There are still peppers and eggplants and even a rogue tomato growing in the path among a load of old pots and trays that washed there in the storm. There is a carpet of tiny weeds that need immediate attention before they become an impenetrable forest. All in all it isn't the disaster it could have been. : o) ... See MoreSee Less

All good things must come to an end, and our Botanica World Discoveries trip to Norfolk Island is over and after an uneventful flight back to Australia the guests said their fond farewells and scattered back to their homes.I've still got another flight back to New Zealand tomorrow before I can truly declare my travels over. In the meantime I've been reminiscing on a most wonderful trip! : o) ... See MoreSee Less
