And for me there was no dirty hands plunged into a weedy soil, and I didn’t even get to pick up a screwdriver to build a greenhouse. There were things from the garden in our dinner as per the rule: “something from the garden in every meal’ – however it was all from the freezer so I didn’t even need to put my gumboots on to prepare dinner like I normally do.
But I did do gardening of sorts. I ended up spending most of the day on the computer writing about gardening, researching cool and interesting gardening things and planning and preparing for the new season. I am about to sow the second batch of seeds, with the tomatoes and ones that can take the cooler conditions – such as the brassicas. I’m about four days behind when I did it last year but I don’t think it will make that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things.
I’ll also be sowing things that I have learnt really need a long season to have any fantastic results so I shall mollycoddle the melons until long after the last frost and make sure it is truly warm and they are big and strong enough before I plant them out so they can benefit from all the extra attention that will be lavished on them this year.
There are so many different ways we can garden – I even do it in my dreams!

We have a long dormant phase here, but I always enjoy the planning part and reading gardening books through the winter.

We are really blessed to be able to garden all year long, however often the planning and reading time is eaten into by weeding time as they never stop growing!
