GARDENING

Amazing Avocados

Day 2 of #MakeMayCount was starting to look like there would be no room at all for anything ‘planty’.  As it was a weekend day, we wanted to paint one of the bedrooms in our house.  We haven’t really done a lot to the inside of the house since we moved it onto our coastal property, as the outside and gardens have been our priority.  … Continue reading Amazing Avocados

My peppers, chillies and eggplants seem to have missed the memo that the seasons have changed. They are blooming and fruiting and living their best life.Optimistically I'm cheering them on, but experience tells me they will slowly and surely give up the will to live as the wild winter weather whips them about. But I'm hoping they will last long enough for a few more harvests, before they wither away and I pull them out and prepare their spot for the next crop. : o) ... I keep the sandy paths between my garden beds weed free with my trusty hoe. We’ve probably clocked up loads of kms wandering up and down chopping off weeds at their knees. After a several years of wear and tear, and possibly neglect, (because I’m not all that good at putting things away … well - if I’m going to use it again tomorrow…) the inevitable happened and it broke.I patched it with what I had on hand - green painters tape. It seemed to work - if I was gentle. Then it broke again in a different place and I put it back together, gave it a splint with bamboo poles bound together with masking tape. It didn’t look pretty but creativity won the day.Yesterday, I was at one of my favourite places - Mitre 10, when I spied a shiny new handle that even came with a handy screw to lock it in place. Now it is just like new – well not quite, but I sharpened the edge and we’re back in business. Mend and Make Do! : o) ... See MoreSee Less

I grew lentils so you don’t have to.🟠 I was hoping this would be a game changer and as ‘economic vegetarians’ I could replace the extraordinarily expensive mince beef which was once a staple, with homegrown lentils that not only delivered the same nutrients but also fibre. (I’d done my research).🟠 The seeds were hard to source – which should have been a clue, but I did find some ‘for sprouting’ and ordered a handful.🟠 The plants grew well and it was a journey of self-discovery with dainty white flowers and teeny tiny pods that held one or two seeds in each.🟠 I let them dry on the plant and then undertook the tedious process of separating out the seeds. There is still one more process to go because they have an outer shell and currently look nothing like the split red lentils you can buy in large bags for next to nothing, but I haven’t figure that out yet. 🟠 I grew four 1 metre rows and based on effort and results I won’t be growing them again.🟠But it was a good idea at the time. : o) ... I think I may have put this job off long enough...The shallots have being lingering out in the greenhouse to cure for long enough. It's supposed to take a few weeks, not a few months. But I'm onto it now. If anyone needs me, I'll be doing the fiddly work of peeling shallots to make pickled onions... It should only take a day or two in front of a good movie or two... I just need to remember to save the fattest ones to go back into the garden in the coming days! : o) ... See MoreSee Less
