The Story of the Dome

Finally – I’m in.  There are seedlings in there.  It isn’t quite finished as we are still waiting for the glass to arrive, but it is coming on a slow boat from China and I’m ok with that as it is the best option for my back pocket! Knowing there was a bit of a wait, and my seedlings were beginning to overstay their welcome … Continue reading The Story of the Dome

The last burst of dramatic makeovers done for the week. The lookout at the top of the stairs with the time capsule / sundial / compass has been freed from weeds, revealing its brick paver base and its Muehlenbeckia edges have been trimmed. It has been such a productive but exhausting week. I won't be lying when I say I'm completely knackered and am looking forward to a few days of rain! I have certainly made some hay while this sun shined : o) ... See MoreSee Less

Eventually I'll run out of these dramatic before and after shots... but today is not that day!Today I cleared the stairs in The Palace Garden from their season of neglect. Rome wasn't built in a day and hard choices were made regarding which jobs got done first... this wasn't high on the list, so it continued to rage out of control. Fortunately I have a system for sorting it out easily with a combination of power tools and specialist tools that whip through the wildness in a jiffy, turning it into a relaxing mindful activity with dramatic results! : o) ... Today I did a few quick before and after garden tidy ups. Now in the edible garden, I just have the fruit section to do and I can stop calling it end of season clear up and start looking forward to new season prep.Fennel is technically a perennial so I've put it in its own bed and has thanked me by producing some nice fat bulbs that I'll be having for dinner tonight in a risotto!Spring is two months away... not that I'm counting! : o) ... Another long overdue project taken off the list! This one has been waiting patiently for eight years and now I've done it.I always wanted a rack of some kind to hold all of my waratahs and rebar poles. Sadly weeds had gotten a hold of the area and so it was a bit of a job clearing them all away. Then I used the holes in a couple of waratahs to attach some supports to the side of the compost heap. All I need to do is keep those pesky weeds at bay with a weekly hoe!Gotta love these blue sky winter days! : o) ... See MoreSee Less

Another winter garden task sorted.I took care of the raspberries.🧤The first piece of advices is "Wear gloves!!!" (Don't be like me)🧤🍓The autumn fruiting raspberries just get cut to the ground - easy peasy.🍓The summer fruiting ones are a bit trickier because you have to work out which were last years fruiting canes and which are the new ones. Then the old ones get chopped off, along with the spindly weak ones. 🍓By far the worst bit is weeding in among the canes - they are so prickly!🍓Then I generously gave them a bit of blood and bone, my favourite Yates Dynamic Lifter and tucked them in with a good layer of compost. 🐓I've had to put a temporary fence around the patch because the chickens have taken a fancy to the raspberry bed. I will need to curb their wandering ways. : o) ... See MoreSee Less
