50 Gardens in one Month

50 Gardens in one Month It isn’t often you can say you have visited over 50 gardens in one month, but this November that is what I did.  Well, if I’m completely honest – a few were in the very tail end of October and one of the gardens was mine, so the exact tally is a little hazy, but it was all part of … Continue reading 50 Gardens in one Month

Happy Birthday Hubby the Un-Gardener.😍Thanks for all your digging on demand, construction help and all sorts of other gardening chores (even though the Dr recommended maybe you shouldn't because of the knee you hurt while working in the garden - thank you for your sacrifice!)😍And thank you for carrying my backpack through countless gardens you have no interest in and wish you were at a boat show instead.😍Thanks for being my number one supporter and encouraged me to achieve so much more than I thought I could - and as an enabler to encourage me to dream big in the garden. How does a beetroot birthday cake sound... after you've moved those bags of compost? : o) ... ⏰⚡Friday Flash Back ⚡⏰ - on a THURSDAY!It is always a good idea to keep a record of what you’ve done, and when you did it. I’m terrible at taking notes – I have a squillion notebooks, journals and diaries with a few optimistic entries followed by pristine blank pages. But I’m good at taking photos. Sometimes it is a well composed image for share, a quick snap of something that surprises me, or a hastily taken photo as I turn back on a finished job remembering to document the task for future me to see. This is what I’ve done on this day each year I’ve been in this garden:📸2025: I sorted out my strawberries. 📸2024: I made some kind of meal with fresh produce from the garden.📸2023: I marvelled at the Erlicheer daff and rose growing side by side.📸2022: I was doing the right thing and checking the soil pH.📸2021: I gave the asparagus its annual sort out.📸2020: I’m not sure what I was doing – but it was dirty work!📸2019: I’m doing a bit of garden chit chat recording for radio.📸2018: I’m in the middle of garden building, avoiding mistakes of the past. : o) ... I think I answered one of life's burning questions? After 241 days growing peanuts from seed - is it worth making your own peanut butter?Well... it does taste great if that counts for something. To find out all the finer details - like how to grow peanuts and how I made peanut butter and all the value number crunching - check out my latest blog post. The link is in the comments... : o) ... See MoreSee Less

Over the last couple of days I have revealed some black gold!A couple of my compost bays had become overrun with kikuyu, leaving me to overload the last bay with all the trimmings coming out of the garden. And the reason for this egregious mistreatment of one of the fundamental operation systems in the garden... a compost tomato!I get so despondent by the poorly behaved tomatoes in the garden, I let the interlopers stay. Even though I've never had a ripe tomato from them, I do it every year. In the meantime the kikuyu sneaks in as the tomato willingly releases blight spores into my compost as it dies unfruitfully. I never learn. : o) ... See MoreSee Less

Hold on a moment - you are not supposed to be doing that. I haven't given you your seasonal sort out yet... that was on the list for next week...But I won't say no to an out of season strawberry daiquiri if enough of these rogue strawberries manage to turn into something. : o) ... See MoreSee Less
