State of the Garden

In order to decide what to grow, (see yesterday’s post) I needed to assess the state of the garden and see what can go where, and what is still lingering.  It is always good to do a state of the garden review and make some to do lists and help ease into the change of direction and focus a new season can bring.   For weeks … Continue reading State of the Garden

Socks and Seeds

I put socks on yesterday.  I’m probably just being a bit namby pamby, but my feet got cold.  Not winter cold by any stretch of the imagination.  But that shock cold when the temperatures you have been used to up until recently have you eying up anything that can remotely be used as a fan to wave air around you to enjoy the cooling effect, … Continue reading Socks and Seeds

A day in the garden

In anticipation of the impending seed sowing season, I have cleaned my greenhouse.I took everything out, dusted and swept out every nook and cranny. Then I washed the benches and rinsed them down with a disinfectant.Once that dried I treated the wood with a linseed oil and kerosene mix. I'm going to let this all soak in for a couple of days and let the air clear before organising everything back into their spots. It always feel great to start the season with a spotlessly, hygienically clean greenhouse. It is like flipping a seasonal reset switch as the detritus of the last season has been cleared away and the new season is full of possibilities. Not long now. : o) ... See MoreSee Less

One of my stored kumara sent me a message - waving tiny green flags to say its time to start sprouting them for long enough tipu slips to plant out in the garden once the soil is warm enough for them. So I popped it in a jar of water. It's a little early, but it has been a bit of a warm winter (hence the peppers still peppering in the garden). But who's gonna argue with a kumara. It also means we need to eat a lot more kumara to get through them before they all start sprouting. : o) ... See MoreSee Less

I am super grateful for all of the delicious things that continue to come out of the garden - even in the middle of winter!(Although after yesterday's pepper post, you might not think I'm truly grateful!) : o) ... See MoreSee Less
