I told you there was a lot of stuff in my garden….

Not a bad haul considering there is only 20 days until winter!  We have butternut squash, peppers and chillies, more beans than I know what to do with, three tiny zucchini, carrots, kale, broccoli, rhubarb and the last of the tomatoes. Come again soon – this autumn weather is just too balmy to be stuck inside, I must try to do more gardening. Sarah the … Continue reading I told you there was a lot of stuff in my garden….

Scooping soil with a spoon

I have continued on my quest to ensure I get things done in the garden every day.  Although yesterday was a bit of a technicality as I purchased things for the garden rather than actually worked in it. I normally grow my daffodils and other spring bulbs in a multitude of buckets with holes drilled in the bottom.  For a cost conscious gardener this is … Continue reading Scooping soil with a spoon

What kind of winter is this?

Seriously!  Winter is supposed to be cold, wet and yucky, with a roaring fire to keep you warm. Gumboots are meant to be essential to stop your feet getting saturated when walking across the lawn.  Raincoats should be at the ready and warm woolly jumpers should be pretty much glued on.  Jack Frost should be a regular visitor; however we’ve seen more of the Tooth … Continue reading What kind of winter is this?

On a grey day sunshine can be found in strange places.

Aside from the green of the grass and the grey sky, there isn’t too much colour going on in my winter world.  Sometimes we do get those incredible blue sky days where everything looks like is part of some grand jewel collection.  But for the most part it grey and bleak.  Even most of the winter veggies are cloaked in green, except the brilliant red … Continue reading On a grey day sunshine can be found in strange places.

We had a frost – and I missed it!

While I was off spending time with family and making marmalade, dramatic things were happening in my garden. The temperatures had been falling all week and it was getting really cold.  It had been so mild for so long that the thought of a frost didn’t really enter my head as a possibility except as a vague risk that would destroy my peppers and make … Continue reading We had a frost – and I missed it!

A multiple choice heading: A) This is a strange storm; B) I gave the mice too much credit; C) The worst cake ever!

As far as storms go – it has been quite sunny.  There have been loads of rainbows, loads of strong winds and loads of that big fat raindrop rain, thunder and lightning and we got hail – loads of hail!  Around 2:00pm the temperature dropped to 6°C but for the most part it was sunny. For some of my fellow kiwis, it is a bit … Continue reading A multiple choice heading: A) This is a strange storm; B) I gave the mice too much credit; C) The worst cake ever!

I let the weather get the better of me.

While I started off the day, busy as a beaver, doing chores inside, the general yuckiness outside descended like a gloomy gloom.  And I’m just being a sook because the boffins are causing fear and panic down south saying an Antarctic snow storm, the likes that haven’t been seen for twenty odd years, is about to descend on the southern part of the country with … Continue reading I let the weather get the better of me.

Business as usual – just not the right kind of business.

Tuesdays are almost always never fun.  It is when I have to stay inside, whatever the weather and crunch numbers until they are all crunchy and make sense and balance books to get them so perfect you could measure them with a spirit level.  I really don’t know how this became my responsibility as I am really not that good at maths.  I think it … Continue reading Business as usual – just not the right kind of business.
