Seriously – I should not be allowed near stores with gardening supplies.

Hubby the Un-Gardener wanted to pop in to the local ‘red shed’.  This is a nickname for a very ubiquitous chain of stores that contain everything imaginable and funny enough are painted red.  These stores have somehow managed to embrace our very kiwi-ness and as a chain of stores if it was to suddenly depart it would be noticed in the very core of our culture and society.

So here we were in a retail utopia surrounded by bargains and modestly priced bounty and we all quickly separated.  Hubby the Un-Gardener went off in search of the item of his desire, strangely but making me proud the kids headed to the book section and not the toy section.

I bet you can’t guess where I went.   Yup – to the garden centre section.  I wandered up and down the aisles seeing what was new and taking note of the things I would need later in the season.  I didn’t have a list and at this point there wasn’t anything I needed right now.  Well I didn’t think there was.

How cure is this? I had to have it!
How cute is this? I had to have it!

But that was before I came across the clearance table.  There were treasures there.  Things I didn’t know I needed.  Cheap things I didn’t know I needed.  Normally this would be end of season bulbs for a couple of dollars or gloves marked down because they have too many.  This time is was big stuff.  Cool stuff and I don’t know how I have completed my gardening journey thus far without them.

I should have everything I need for gardening now - even the garden sink!
I should have everything I need for gardening now – even the garden sink!

I bought the cutest looking wooden potting bench that will look awesome in my new greenhouse – when I finish building it.  And a cool outdoor sink that I need to find somewhere to install as currently my garden doesn’t even have a water supply and I have to have the longest hose in the world to irrigate my garden.  But the good news it is will soon have a water supply, even if I have to cobble something together myself.  If you buy a sink the water will come!

Although there was something extra special that came with my purchases and Hubby the Un-Gardeners coveted items and that is cardboard packaging.  I now have my hands on enough cardboard to sheet mulch my new garden bed….  Yeah I know – another bed…  I’m a sucker for a slice of garden.

Ok I may have deceived you - there are two new beds marked out!

Come again soon – the greenhouse still waits in pieces.

  1. Clearance sections in Garden Centers should be hidden away out of the sight of the avid gardener. Potting benches always come in handy though and we all know how vital to garden success an out door sink is ……….. 😀

    1. Hi Elaine. Ok now you are enabling me! I am such a sucker for a bargain – especially stuff I didn’t know I needed. I’m sure the sink will become indispensable, once I figure out where to put it and how to get water to it!

    1. Hi Arthur. They always have such cool stuff. The thing is – this was a before season sale. Which is even better, because I’ll get to use them now! Yay!

  2. I am always a sucker for those cheap garden seeds they sell just before the beginning of the season. You know the ones they sell them for 10-25 cents a pack, some grow but most refuse to germinate. However, it always seems like a bargain, doesn’t it?

    1. Hi There. It always takes a few seasons to learn the hard way that cheap end of season seeds is a bad idea, but each time I am still tempted. I’ll never learn.

  3. Potting benches are fab! I just bought mine and painted it to match the shed doors. Oh the little things that make us happy in the garden! 🙂

    1. Hi there. I love my new potting bench, although at this point I’ll probably be using it out in the open, in the middle of my garden.
I hadn’t thought about painting it. That sounds awesome. I will have to think about it seriously though before adding yet another task to my ever increasing to do list!
