My recent article in Bite, the fabulous foodie section of the NZ Herald came with a wonderful accompaniment, a collection of recipes to complement what is being harvested in my garden. Each one was a mouth-watering wonder and it only made sense to recreate each one for my dinner each night, using the very harvest that was the inspiration in the first place.
First up I made the amazing Tomato and watermelon salad. I was initially sceptical as the tomato, watermelon combo as it wasn’t something I’d have put together myself, but then I’m not a creative chef like Warren Elwin who took inspiration from my humble garden.
The colours and flavours were such a pleasure to put together as I prepared our family meal. I used produce that was harvested as I needed it and popped out to the garden several times. Everything was so fresh and amazing. It went down such a treat with the entire family and there wasn’t so much as a morsel left as everyone declared is was delicious.

So we are off to a great start and tomorrow night we will chose something else from Warren’s creations and I can hardly wait.
Come again soon – feeding the family with the fruits of my labour is such a rewarding thing to do.

Great job, Sarah! And, yes, that looks like a colorful and yummy dish.
Thanks Michael. It was a really lovely dish, so fresh and the flavours worked so well together.
Cheers Sarah : o)
What was the dressing the onions were marinating in? It looks truly scrumptious 🙂
I love that feeling, too, when we can feed ourselves from our own garden.
Hi Helen, there is a link to the recipe attached to its name, but it was a surprising blend of tarragon vinegar, orange juice and zest, a green chilli, black pepper, sugar and olive oil. It may just be my new favourite dressing.

Sorry – I didn’t catch the link. Thanks for the explanation 🙂
It looks delicious, Sarah. And congratulations on the magazine article.
Hi Alys. It was so yummo! It was really lovely to have recipes created to compliment my garden. I can’t wait to try the next one.

That is special, Sarah.
A few months ago I had a Rojo Salad at a nearby restaurant, made with red tomatoes, watermelon and red onions. It was a surprisingly good combination.
Yum! I wouldn’t have thought of putting those together but now I want to try!
Hi Malena. They were so good. I just wish the season could go on forever so I can keep having them.
