Twas just days before Christmas

And all through the garden Not a weed was stirring not even tbe dock And the vines were staked and tied In hopes that red tomatoes would soon be here The potatoes were asleep in their bed As visions of mint sauce danced in my head The garden has been given its final once over.  There is now no time to linger, not even for … Continue reading Twas just days before Christmas

How we do Christmas – kiwi style!

Although the weather is still playing unfair, with gloomy grey skies, trapping hot muggy heat beneath the clouds,  This isn’t festive weather, we prefer our heat a little drier and our skies a little bluer.  But Christmas is coming and the show must go on. The garden is flourishing in this humid weather and you can almost see the plants grow before your eyes, but … Continue reading How we do Christmas – kiwi style!

PHOTO DAY 10: Mystery

Brief:  share an image that creates a sense of mystery. This weekend I am at a Christmas Market, although I still feel it is way too early to be thinking about Christmas.  I’m a kinda two weeks before kind of girl.  Besides the weather is still terrible so you can’t possibly feel Christmassy in the cold and wet.  It has to be hot, sunny and possibly … Continue reading PHOTO DAY 10: Mystery

Someone stuck a festive period in the middle of my growing season.

I spend all winter dreaming of my perfect garden.  I put things in place to improve on last year.  Mistakes were learnt from.  I carefully selected seeds and dug sodden, cold dirt and carefully removed all trace of weed so this one would be the best season ever.  The plants are planted with care and start to really get going and there is a hint … Continue reading Someone stuck a festive period in the middle of my growing season.

It may have been silly to promise to blog every day in the silly season!

A round of Christmas doos, a nativity play, excessive amounts of shopping (and we’re still not done) alongside the general management of life has meant not only has the garden been neglected, but so has the talking about it! So in summary – the grass is longer than ever, there are more weeds than veggies, my spuds got blight and we have continued to eat … Continue reading It may have been silly to promise to blog every day in the silly season!

Today is a momentous day – its potato day!

Every year I mark in my calendar this day, having specially counted back from the harvest date so I know they will be perfect for harvesting on the right day and today my calendar popped up with a reminder:  plant spuds. You see the thing is – I like to grow Jersey Benne spuds, among the other varieties I grow.  They are the first ones … Continue reading Today is a momentous day – its potato day!

Merry Christmas to all…

Sometimes the thought of a white Christmas with snow all around and chestnuts roasting on an open fire which also takes the chill off your rosy cheeks after a day focussed purely on finding the right gifts, having time to do festive baking, building snowmen and doing all the things they sing about in the Christmas carols, sounds wonderful. The problem is none of the … Continue reading Merry Christmas to all…

Don’t panic … I found it.

There are 16 sleeps until Christmas and finally I have found the Christmas feeling, and all it took was a change in the weather.  We are on our second consecutive day of clear blue skies, hot sunny days and the birds are singing and all is right will the world.  Now we have captured the Christmas spirit, all we need to do is keep it.  … Continue reading Don’t panic … I found it.

Why is it still raining?

Although I have to say – it hasn’t been continuous – there have been dry bits.  It’s just there has been some rain EVERY DAY!  But still – it’s supposed to be summer – you know – ice cream cones, getting wet by swimming at the beach not being drenched because you can’t find your umbrella, T shirts and shorts – not jeans and jumpers.  … Continue reading Why is it still raining?

Due to circumstances beyond my control…

I spend all year with great expectations about how wonderful my garden is going to be, and what improvements I’ll make and what I’ll do with the produce and how it’s just all going to be perfect.  And it should be – I put in a lot of planning and hard work. But our summer is in the worst part of the year for the … Continue reading Due to circumstances beyond my control…
